Makerfaire 2017 Origami Installation

This installation explores modular architecture as a screening device by aggregating volumetric modules to provide different degrees of porosity. A lattice of inverted octahedrons is used to propagate around a column into a doubled layer screen. Digital fabrication was adopted in the design to mass produce modules with subtle variations. The porosity of the outer layer displays a gradient change in porosity thus altering the appearance of the inner layer.

The origami concept of the project invites public participation. Guests of the Maker Fair can help fold new prefabricated modules and add on to the existing structure. Engaging participants to learn about the effect of modularity.

A Participatory Design

The column is made of 2 layers, a base layer (brown) and a facade layer (white). The second layer is intended for participatory design. Kids are encourage to come and make a plug-in module and add to the overall aesthetics of the column.
